Battery Park City Cove Video

This video views an area of multiple pilings in the Battery Park southern cove. The tide seems to be quite strong and the water is whipping around red alga, from the genus Ceramium. Flashes of comb jellies can be seen being carried along by the tide. These jellies are in the family Ctenophora, and are not actually related to jellyfish at all. This individual is a member of the species Mnemiopsis leidyi, commonly known as the American comb jelly. It is a small carnivore feeding mostly on zooplankton and can be found in the Hudson River estuary during warmer months.
